Dietary folic acid supplement, useful during pregnancy.
Folic Acid dietary supplement in tablet form, useful during pregnancy. Folic acid or pteroyl(mono)glutamic acid or vitamin M or vitamin B9 or folacin, takes its name from the Latin: folium (leaf). Folic acid or folate is involved in the synthesis of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) and in the metabolism of certain amino acids; it is necessary for the growth of new cells and for the development of the embryo, helps reduce the risk of congenital malformations in children and is also indispensable in adults for the best utilisation of iron.
Together with vitamins B6 and B12, it is involved in homocysteine metabolism. In women who decide to conceive, a daily intake of 400 mcg (0.4 mg) of folic acid is strongly recommended to prevent the occurrence of these serious foetal malformations. Natural sources of folic acid are offal, legumes, tomatoes and oranges.
