Full description

Magnesium (Mg) is the fourth most abundant cation in the body where it performs numerous vital functions:
- Together with phosphorus and calcium, it participates in the mineralisation and development processes of the skeletal system.
- It regulates the excitability of the nerve cell and muscle fibre, in particular, it has demonstrated a calming and muscle-relaxing action respectively.
- Magnesium is also essential for good cardiovascular function. in particular, it participates in regulating electrolyte balance and preventing potassium loss, promotes vasodilation and has demonstrated an antithrombotic and anti-platelet effect.
- Finally, magnesium is the cofactor of numerous enzymes involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids, and in particular is the cofactor of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), one of the main sources of energy for cells.

A magnesium deficiency can interfere in the transmission of nerve and muscle impulses and cause irritability and nervousness. Supplementing one's diet with magnesium can prevent depression, muscle weakness, dizziness, nervous tics and PMS, and maintain the body's pH balance,

Possible manifestations of magnesium deficiency can be mental confusion, insomnia, irritability, difficult digestion, tachycardias and convulsions; often a magnesium deficiency can be synonymous with diabetes, be the cause of cardiovascular problems, cardiac arrhythmia, hypertension, sudden cardiac arrest, asthma, chronic fatigue, depression, bladder problems and lung problems.
Magnesium has been found to be deficient, in particular, in the elderly, premenstrual women and alcoholics.
